Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage from one of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
